Northern Ireland records are issued by the DVLNI (Driver Vehicle Licensing Northern Ireland) and are Dateless plates, as they contain no identifying number year. The combinations of letters are assigned to specific areas in Northern Ireland, and are issued on a first come first served basis in a manner similar to the plates undated registration of the main land Britain from 1932 to 1963.In Northern Ireland, the current registration system has the form of ABC 1000.
B and C are Tag letters representing the county or city in which the vehicle was searched and A denotes the position in the series. The numbering starts at 1000 and ends in 9999. After 9999, the next letter in alphabetical order, is used in position A and the numbering series will run from 1000 to 9999, once again. The list of current county codes below.
The county identification cards had been used without the series of identification numbers position in the same order they are used now. Once all these records were issued, the letter has been added to increase capacity. The numbers for below 1000 are not issued to the public, but held back by the DVA and sold as personalized license plates.
This system is also used in the Republic Ireland until 1986, as part of the British original, all Ireland system. It is similar to an older system used on the mainland, but with a smaller number (mainland was 999 and AAA AAA Ireland 9999). It also uses the letters I and Z were not used in the main land. In this system, two letter county code was for all counties or administrative regions in Ireland, but now used only in Northern Ireland. The DVA in Northern Ireland is considering adopting the system used in the rest of the UK, so that the first letter.
The DVLNI (Driver Vehicle Licensing Northern Ireland) is the agency responsible for managing and distribution of license plates in Northern Ireland. However, the records of Ireland are restricted to vehicles in Northern Ireland. They can be used in mainland Britain as number plates valued as a cheap way to hide the age of a vehicle like the undated records from the mainland, the Irish number plates can be placed on vehicles of any age.
