Brass turned gray?
Help! I tried to clean my door handles of brass (which are very old, those with holes Skeleton Key) and turned gray button! I do not know if this is normal? There was plenty of rust on the button before cleaning. Can I still bright and look better? Do you have a good suggestion for a housewife? Thanks for your input.
Most likely, the problem is organic crud and possibly the remains of a layer lacquer. Nice, old, and …… easily removed in the sink w / plenty of warm water and scrub well. That dirt and you can see the coatings that can be left behind. If there are traces of varnish, fairly easy to get / w paint remover. Some metal cleaners have ammonia or acids that can discolor the oxidation surface. Brasso as mentioned heavy finally cut through "boring", but it takes some elbow grease. Out of the box must be removed for cleaning completely. Once cleaned, instead of a polished metal, try using Auto polish to maintain shine. Cleaning compounds pink / white to keep the shine. No items chemical damage to the base metal and wax gives some protection. 2 ways to go ….. everything possible to Buff & polish or a bright light polishing to bring the strengths and preserve part of the patina. You can also try a store of products for the treatment of marine metals used to clean and protect. Best regards
