Distortion, gain and logarithmic curves.?
Does anyone know exactly what an amplifier causes distortion? And what does the button change gain, causing more or less distortion? Also, does anyone know why the graph of distortion versus gain is a logarithmic curve?
Amplifiers using nonlinear devices (such as transistors or tubes) that do cause distortion, but are somewhat "linear" negative feedback. The gain control signal changes the amount fed to an amplifier or directly can control the amplification in some designs, for example, by adjusting the feedback resistor in an operational amplifier. High level of distortion may be due to "saturate" the amplifier (introducing an excessive number of signal). In some applications overdrive distortion is eagerly sought, and special controls are added to otherwise amplifiers perfectly well for production. Amplifier output is limited by its ability to output power and gain limits its early stages. The distortion may be the result of an output stage saturation or earlier. A logarithmic scale is often used to display audio data, because the dynamic range is consideration is so huge. For example, a typical dynamic range could be 80 dB. This corresponds to a maximum ratio between minimum power of 10 * 8, or 100,000,000. A graph of distortion versus power would be almost entirely dedicated to the highest levels of output, with the lowest levels in full one end of the screen. Since some types of distortions (eg, crossover distortion) are worse in lower energy levels, which would be unable to see how change in these levels. If you are asking a registration form to an increased function of the distortion curve, which would need to see a description more detailed or a webpage with a frame.
